How to Spot a Fake Listing: A Buyer's Safety Checklist

If the price feels off, it probably is

A phone or vehicle listed at half the going rate isn't a lucky find — it's usually bait. Before you get excited about a deal, search the same model on IdealAssets and compare. A genuine seller clearing out an item quickly might price 10–15% under market; a scam listing is priced 40–60% under to get you to act before you think.

Never pay before you've seen the item

A legitimate seller has no reason to need payment before you've inspected what you're buying — especially for a secondhand item. Any request to pay an upfront 'booking amount,' 'courier fee,' or 'advance' to 'hold' the item is the single most common pattern in resale scams. Walk away.

Check the seller's badge and track record

On IdealAssets, a seller's profile shows their verification status and rating. A Verified badge means we've confirmed their identity — it doesn't guarantee the item's condition, but it does mean there's a real, accountable person behind the listing. Be more cautious with brand-new, unverified accounts, especially for high-value items like vehicles and electronics.

Insist on meeting in person, in public

A seller who repeatedly avoids meeting, pushes to 'just ship it' across cities, or wants to communicate only outside the IdealAssets chat is showing you exactly how this will go if something's wrong later. For anything you can reasonably inspect in person — electronics, vehicles, furniture — meet in a public place in daylight before you pay anything.

When in doubt, report it

If a listing or a conversation feels wrong, use the Report option on the listing or chat. Our moderation team reviews every report, and flagging a suspicious listing helps protect the next buyer too — even if you've already decided to walk away yourself.
